Lovely as an ornamental specimen with their orange globular fruit and leather-like leaves that color purple come fall. Unlike the Asian persimmon variety, its fruit skin has a bitter, astringent flavor (not to be bitten) and ripened, sweet pulp is a golden orange or red color and very sweet. Tolerates poor soil but should be planted in full sun in well-draining soil.
